Left your eyeglasses on the airplane? Don’t let this ruin your vacation because Dr. Julio Cesar Duran Cruz has extensive office hours, reasonable prices, and reliable service. In just one week you can have a new pair of prescription glasses or sunglasses. Best yet, Opti-Duran is in town so you don’t have to spend hours traveling for a good ophthalmologist.
I had the lens fall out of my eye glasses for driving the first month I lived in La Penita. Neighbors steered me to Dr. Duran and I have been a customer since 2007. Not only was I impressed by the fast delivery of new glasses, but I made a new friend.
Stepping into the Opti-Duran office is like stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting: it almost seems like the good old days when life was slower. No air conditioning, simple cabinets, older equipment but just as much knowledge and much more caring than at a chain store. Dr. Duran is proud that he has loyal customers and his own business since he came from a working class background.
“I always wanted to help people since I was a little boy,” explained Dr. Duran. “I was fascinated by the eye and what it enables us to do and understand.” He had family members with visual problems that couldn’t afford to get treatment. This convinced the idealistic young man to pursue medicine focusing on eye health and eye diseases. As an Ophthalmologist/oftalmologo Dr. Duran can treat eye diseases, and write prescriptions for medi
cines. “My most common tasks are to prescribe glasses, control eye pressure, and treat eye infections. With the increased construction the last few years, I get more workers coming in with eye injury.”
Dr. Julio Duran said, “After finishing my studies Instituto Politécnico Nacional and completing my ophthalmology specialization, I went to work for another doctor in Mexico City.” During these years he saved towards opening his own office. “When I was ready to start my own business, I chose La Penita because of the area’s natural beauty and friendly people. I wanted the small town lifestyle.” He wanted his family to have a safer, better life than in his native urban Mexico City.
As an optometrist, Dr. Duran provides comprehensive eye exams to determine the overall health of your eyes and the quality of your vision. He is concerned about your eye care and is trained to detect, diagnose, treat, prevent and co-manage any problem related to the eyes.
Opti-Duran also offers eye glass products: frames, lenses, contacts, and various eye solutions. While Opti-Duran’s has no catalog to select from, any frame that a customer asks for can be obtained.
When appropriate, Dr. Duran can refer patients to the appropriate specialists for advanced medical, surgical or laser treatments. In addition to Dr. Julio, his son, Samuel, is also a doctor of optometry and works in the business. Drs. Julio and Samuel understand some English even though they don’t speak it. Another family member, Monserrat Hernandez Duarte (pictured) does speak English.

Just think, with the money and time that you save you can be relaxing on the beach with a cold one. The shop might be no frills but it offers full service with progressive/bifocal/ or any type of lens you need.
