As the scourge of the covid 19 pandemic keeps its grip on modern life for the second year, many are anxious to travel south of the border. The good news is that beautiful Mexico has zero states that are designated “red” under the federal stoplight system between September 22 and October 3. Twenty-four states- including Jalisco and Nayarit- are designated “yellow.” Under yellow, all work activities are permitted. Public space may open on a regular basis, while enclosed public spaces can open with reduced capacity. All activities should be carried out with basic prevention measures. People at higher risk of developing COVID-19 symptoms should continue to take extra precautions. That being said, the stunning beaches and relaxed lifestyle of rural Mexico are a great way to practice safe health protocol. I know that it isn’t in the government policy but I’m certain that a margarita or cold cerveza on the beach is good for you!

For those that are flying into Mexico, the airlines and airports have rigid safe health procedures in place. There are huge signs that warn if your fail to wear a facemask you will be arrested/ fined- so don’t plan on removing your mask. Foreigners need to add another step to their travel preparations. A completed “Cuestionario de identificación de factores de riesgo en viajeros” (Travelers risk factor identification questionnaire) must be completed and presented upon arrival to immigration.

Important note:  It is not enough to have the electronic receipt on your phone: you must also have a paper version of the questionnaire. The same practice applies to the covid test results when you leave Mexico: you need it on your phone AND a paper copy for immigration to compare.

This means that there is another ‘checkpoint’ for the health forms in addition to the usual red /green light xray after picking up your baggage.  I placed the print copy of my Travelers Risk form inside a plastic sleeve with a copy of my negative covid test result behind it. The airport officers look at the hard copy and compare it to the electronic version. They ask you if you have been around anyone who has covid. In addition, there are temperature checks in various points. As of November 1st, anyone flying that leaves Canada to anywhere, including Mexico, must have proof of being double covid vaccinated.

For those that are coming to Mexico by driving, travelers entering Mexico via land may be subject to health screen including temperature checks. Those exhibiting symptoms may be subject to additional health screening and/or quarantine. Travelers may experience significant delays and face the possibility of being returned to the United States or quarantined in Mexico. Another factor that could add border delay is the tax offices are not operating the same as in past years.

Mexican Immigration (INM) continues to provide law enforcement and public counter services across Mexico.  However, due to reduced staffing, members of the public might experience long wait times for routine services.  INM recommends monitoring its website and Twitter account for information about its current operating status.

When driving, don’t forget to have the Green Angels rescue service pre-installed on your cell: 078.   This fantastic public safety group is available if you are on a Mexican Federal Highway or Toll Road. They are available 24 hours a day by phone, but may not be available during the evening because it’s not recommended to drive in Mexico after nightfall. The fully equipped white and green trucks can assist with minor engine repairs or help change tires. If it’s a big problem, Green Angles will tow you to a mechanic. The service is free, including towing and mechanical assistance. However, parts needed to repair a vehicle and gas or oil must be paid for. It’s a good idea to tip the driver, however.

Now that the weather has started to dip, it’s time to prepare for your r & r time south of the border. Just plan ahead to get your new health docs and you’ll breeze right through immigration whether by land or air.

All travellers arriving in or departing from Mexico must fill out an online health declaration and submit it up to 12 hours from the time of their departure. Once submitted, they will receive a confirmation and QR code. This QR code will be valid up to three hours past the scheduled departure time. In case of a delay greater than three hours, travelers will need to submit the form again and receive a new QR code. Children under 2 years old are exempt.
