The Impact of Covid19 on Local Civic Groups

Life as we knew it changed in 2020 with the global sanctions to try to control the covid 19 pandemic. In tourism based economies, such as Jaltemba Bay, Nayarit, Mexico, the shutdown of normal business is catastrophic. The normally hard working people of Los Ayalas, Guayabitos, La Penita and La Colonias were suddenly starving and without the basic electricity or medicines. Many countries assisted their citizens by paying unemployment and giving stimulus checks to help with living expenses; not so in Mexico. But, area civic groups- supported by international friends- stepped up to help with soup kitchens. Thank you, thank you for sending those donations!

However, as the pandemic grinds on, many seasonal visitors are not heading south of the border for the winter due to health concerns.  This is devastating to the area non-profit groups that provide a variety of services to the Mexican community because each group puts on an annual fundraising event in order to provide for their initiatives. Besides the expected reduced number of visitors who would normally attend these events, following the mandated health protocols for public gatherings significantly increases the costs. All of the volunteer committee members are scrambling to come up with an alternative that will protect people and generate funds.

These fundraising parties are so much fun!  Many people plan their vacations just to coincide with various events. Why not enjoy great meals and themed activities that are going to help the community? It’s a win/win/win situation. Even if your favorite charity group has a ‘by’ for this winter, expect them to come back strong after the hiatus! The following photos are from previous events that are usually sold out in advance.

All of the groups exist solely on donations; all are manned solely by volunteers. If you are packing to travel south, please tuck in your suitcase something to give for a silent auction item or stationary supplies for the school children. If you are staying at home, please don’t be offended by social media pleas for cash as most groups have pay pal accounts that you can contribute from anywhere in the world. The non-profit organizations in Jaltemba Bay are still operating!  Those students still have to pay tuition even if it is virtual learning at the moment. The animals are suffering because people are struggling to put food on the table. Watch for upcoming ways to support your favorite cayse.

This list is designed to inform the public and enable you to contact the group directly for specifics on donating, volunteering, or announcement of their projects.  Keep checking the SolMexicoNews.com ezine and the Facebook page ‘Friends Riviera Nayarit Mexico’ for updates on the events as they become available.

Yes, the universe is out of balance but we will get through the crazy period. People everywhere are tightening their belts and changing their way of living.  One way to avoid being depressed by current restrictions is to feel good about helping those less fortunate than you. Altruism is what helps mankind rise above adversity.
