The Good Guys Wear a Mask: Cesar Novoa

Tara A. Spears

There’s a phrase that the good guys wear white hats; in 2020 the good guys wear masks. In the time of the covid19 pandemic, even rural areas such as Jaltemba Bay are taking extreme measures. These health measures are admirable but the downside to mandatory isolation and business closings is instant economic crisis for suddenly unemployed workers.  Typically the month of March and April is the highest earning period for local workers-the income from these two months sustains their family for the remainder of the year. There is no Mexican government unemployment compensation or other economic programs as there are NOTB. Instead, it’s desparate times and children going to bed hungry.

Local businessman, Cesar Novoa and his beautiful wife Angela Caves, have stepped up to help feed the community. “My wife and I have always felt blessed and thankful that we can help others,” said Cesar in perfect English. “We knew as soon as the semana santa tourist season and the beaches closed that people would go hungry. We decided to provide 1000 meals.”

Clearly the Novoas have excellent organizational skills because they quickly began purchasing bulk foods and basic living items such as toothpaste and toilet tissue. Cesar and Angie are actively involved with all phases involved: obtaining goods, preparing meals and delivering to dispersion sites. “Our reward is seeing the beginning of hope come into the eyes of the people we help.”  The first official give away was April 9:  the Novoas were stunned that 1,300 dinners were distributed in two hours!  Angie explained, “We expect the demand to increase as word goes out in all the communities.” Cesar said “ Initially we chose two places that would be easy for many unemployed people to walk to. The town plazas are central. We are planning to expand  food delivery locations if groups of people request it.”

Cesar and Angela are lifetime residents of Jaltemba Bay and grew up in La Penita.  They were high school sweethearts and married after graduating university in southern Florida, USA. This explains their fluency in English. Cesar trained in law and Angie as a respiratory therapist. They have two children.

Three years ago the couple purchased Bungalows Marlenne, one of the area’s popular hotel and restaurant on the ocean in north beach Guayabitos. Recently Cesar build an addition that offers modern luxury suites that would have had a grand opening except for the pandemic. Keep it in mind when you’re planning next year’s vacation to Jaltemba Bay- the stunning ocean front units are available for long term habitation. You can check out Quinta Velas on FB.

‘After the storm comes the rainbow’ might not seem possible in this storm of illness and fear.  But from the adversity rise the true heroes and leaders such as Cesar and Angela who give so much to their community. You are an inspiration to all ages and all nationalities.  Thank you for caring about your fellow man.
