3 Kings are Coming to Town January 6

Perhaps more people will be looking for a positive sign in the night sky this January, 2021. After a stress filled and fearful year, there is comfort in observing traditions such as the “El Día de los Reyes” celebration on Jan. 6th.

In the western Christian tradition, Epiphany is celebrated on January 6 as is the Mexican Epiphany, Día de Los Tres Reyes Magos (Three Wise Kings Day). The legend says that the Kings followed a star to arrive bearing gifts for the baby Jesus. This day is the traditional day of gift exchanging.  It’s not Santa but the Three Kings who leave presents for the children in the night.

In some parts of Mexico, on the previous night to the Kings’ arrival, thousands of little Mexican kids release a balloon which carries a letter to the sky, knowing that it will reach the three wise kings. In other areas of Mexico, children leave a letter in one of their shoes under the Christmas tree.  For many this is the conclusion of the holiday season and the decorations are taken down.

Three Kings Day remains an important holiday for the people of Mexico. In addition to the gift-giving aspect of the day there is also a culinary treat that is specific to the holiday. Known as ‘Rosca de Reyes’ (King’s Cake), this holiday dessert offers much in the way of symbolism. Shaped in the round to signify a king’s crown, this sweet bread holds a special surprise. Baked inside is a small plastic figurine representing the baby Jesus. Whoever finds this token is obligated to host an upcoming party for the occasion of ‘Dia de la Candelaria’ and buy tamales for everyone! (Candlemas Day) which occurs each year on February 2nd.

The reason why baby Jesus is hidden inside the cake, represents another aspect of the holiday. The reason Jesus is ‘hidden’ inside the bread is to symbolize how in life, the Christ child’s birth location also needed to remain secret, in order that his life be spared. Just as 2020 saw mass self-isolation in an attempt to escape contacting the coronavirus, one can identify with the Christ child isolating thousands of years ago.

Whether you bake this cake from scratch or purchase from the grocery store, enjoy this tradition with your family. Stay safe in 2021!
