Mexico’s president urges people to get out of their homes

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, assured that on the recommendation of the doctors, he has asked the population not to be afraid and to leave their homes with all the lessons learned, such as healthy distance.

“What am I proposing on the recommendation of the doctors? Well, let’s start going out, but apply what we have already learned, all the teachings of healthy distance,” he said.

At a press conference, at the facilities of the 63rd Infantry Battalion in Xalapa, Veracruz, the President was asked whether it was not contradictory to call citizens to go out when Health Secretary Hugo López-Gatell indicates that the virus continues at a high rate.

He replied that there must be a balance in health, and at the same time, in the economy, and in returning to coexistence, to freedom.

“Do not let fear overwhelm us, we have to get out little by little. We have already learned enough and we show ourselves to be responsible (…) the behavior of the people is exceptional, that is why the curve was flattened,” he said.

He recalled that while in other countries there were authoritarian measures, in Mexico it was not, because his government rejected those measures.

He insisted that if there were a COVID-19 outbreak, measures would backtrack: “We are going to be pending, but if we take care of ourselves responsibly, with judgment, we can go towards normality. There is already a light indicating that we are going to get out of the tunnel.”

He expressed that there is now more capacity and experience on the part of the medical personnel, so in this new stage he ruled out that there is a risk of overflowing the healthcare system.
