Memories of Fashion Shows’ Past

Memories of Fashion Shows’ Past

  Tara A. Spears

It’s weird to not have a Women to Women Fashion Show to attend this January, 2021. I’ve been present at the gala event for the past 12 years and miss the excitement of preparing. Most of all, I miss the joy of seeing all the ladies dressed up and having fun! For 17 years the volunteer committee has combined creative ideas, hard work, and dedication in order to make each Fashion Show a memorable event. Let’s stroll down memory lane to revisit some of the previous events. Check out the different locations: Look at the model finale at San Carlos;

Fiesta at Bartlett’s estate;  current party in the Guayabitos town plaza.

Four of  the original team from 2002 (Paulina, Ginger, Jan, Val); Committee cochairs for the first ten years, Kate Barron and Debra Triplett.

Various cochairs in the last ten years.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the Women to Women group, 2021 is the 18th year of helping the women and children of the Jaltemba Bay, Mexico community. The group’s sole source of funds is the once-a-year Fashion Show held in January; sadly, due to the covid pandemic, the 2021 event was cancelled.  Although Women to Women has provided a variety of projects depending on need, a constant initiative has been to provide university scholarships for talented young ladies.  To date, the Women to Women group has enabled 78 area teens to reach for their dreams! For the current academic year, we have 21 active students receiving support.

It’s amazing that the masters of ceremony- Bob and Linda Gibbs- have volunteered for all 17 fashion shows. Look how little they’ve changed over time. The handsome couple buy local for their coordinated outfits are theme related and purchased from that year’s featured fashion designers. We look forward to seeing the Gibbs on the stage for 2022 event!

The committee is the think tank that manages the event and it takes nearly 100 volunteers the day of the show to make the afternoon pleasant for the guests. We’re thinking positive and keeping the contact list. Thank you, thank you helpers!

While the 2021 event is a ‘No Show’ we desperately need sponsors to keep our students continuing university. You can donate by purchasing a virtual ‘ticket’ for all the amenities that usually comprise a live fashion show. Visit www.mujeresamujeres.com to donate.

Stay safe and plan on attending Fashion Show face to face in 2022!

(And very special thanks to Tara Spears from the Sol Mexico News for all of your articles on this fabulous event…Bill and Dorothy Bell)
