It’s a little tricky to locate the first time but worth the effort to go to Teriyaki Alex Restaurant in downtown Guayabitos. If you’re looking for an out-of–the-ordinary dining experience that’s off the beaten path, this charming open air café is it.

For 10 years owner Alexandro Cuervas has developed a unique style of Asian fusion menu, live entertainment, and full bar.

Located on a walk way (andador) that connects with the main street, Aveneda Sol Nuevo, the restaurant is like going into a secret garden because it’s bordered by verdant vegetation. Overhead colorful Mexican aper cutouts tremble in the wind;the mouth-watering smells of stir fry veggies, garlic, and ginger hint at good flavors to come and the distinct black/white/red of Asian décorcreates a comfortable ambiance. Truly a Mexican twist on traditional oriental cooking!

Alex is a hardworking businessman, dedicated family man,as well as a talented cook and entertainer. “Singing is my passion, my first love and the secret of my energy, “explained Alex in perfect English. “All of my life I have loved music and singing. My uncle inspired me to sing.”

Alex likes to sing when he’s not working and since owning his own restaurant, it has given him a venue to perform. “Singing is my passion, my first love and the secret of my energy. Music to me is like finding my inner self, my soul. It gives me a great joy to see the audience enjoying the music when I sing.”

The last four years Alex is frequently accompanied by his (now) 9 year old daughter who is also gifted with a beautiful voice and talent.Alex worked for a large hotel in Los Angeles, California, for 20 years.During that time he learned all phases of the restaurant management and tourism.

When the time was right, Alex chose coastal Jaltemba Bay for his business because it ticked all of the boxes of his requirements: excellent place for raising a family; good opportunity to operate a restaurant with Asian dishes; low cost of living in a friendly community and good weather.

“I wanted to offer healthier dinners that the international visitors would like,”said Alex. “I took traditional oriental dishes and modify it with Mexican traditions.”At the time Teriyaki Alex opened it was the sole Asian restaurant in the area.

Part of the reason for the restaurant’s longevity and loyal customers is the exciting menu choices. Before the pandemic, Teriyaki Alex offered breakfast, lunch and dinner. “All of my employees and I adhere to the covid protocol.”

Whereas normally the restaurant capacity is 80, currently less than half of the seating is used and the hours are noon to 9:00 pm with only Sunday morning hosting breakfast.Teriyaki Alex offers takeout and delivery to your home besides dine in seating.

In addition to vegitarian options, the dinner entres rance from salads to steak to seafood and traditional Asian dishes. The following photos are the popular shrimp teriyaki, Kung pao and chicken pad Thai.

Alex says he strives to provide the best quality food freshly prepared and a relaxing, comfortable atmosphere where everyone is welcome. I have the evening entertainment because“Music is the greatest communication in the world. Even if people don’t understand the language that you’re singing in, they still have a good timewhen they hear it.”

Alex hopes to see everyone again when the pandemicis over. You can get a double dose of ‘feel good’when you eat the fresh healthy cuisineat Teriyaki Alex Restaurant and enjoy the singing of Alex! Teriyaki Alex Restaurant
