Generous Supporters Make Jaltemba Cancer Walk 2016 a Success
It’s all your fault! Your big heart and deep pockets are saving lives in our little coastal community. Sure, you looked sexy in your decorated bra and pink; yep, that was quite the bumpin’ dance during the live auction that raised enough to cover 14 mammograms! Had a few brewskis, eh? Well, that mellow feeling provides 30 cervical cancer tests, so good for you!
A special thank you goes to the handsome super bowl buddies who donated their winnings from that party to the Cancer Walk-wow! Besides that, just when the afterglow is fading from the street dance, another supporter lit up the sky to make a generous donation of more than $5,500 pesos. Thanks, Mark! Our Jaltemba Bay neighbors will have a better, healthier life because these guys cared.
Why Jaltemba Cancer Walk Provides Free Screening for Mexican Women and why mammograms are important: Annual mammograms can detect cancer early — when it is most treatable. In fact, mammograms show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. Mammograms can also prevent the need for extensive treatment for advanced cancers and improve chances of breast conservation. Current guidelines from the American College of Radiology, the American Cancer Society, and the Society for Breast Imaging recommend that women receive annual mammograms starting at age 40 — even if they have no symptoms or family history of breast cancer. Sadly, in the Mexican area of Nayarit, female cancers are statistically well above the national average. Cancer Walk provided 120 mammograms, ultrasounds, and pap tests in 2015; of which there were 6 cases of cancer diagnosed.
