The Guayabitos Coffee House is the culmination for years of preparation for the young entrepreneur, Oscar Eduardo Villannuevo Norrega. “Since I was a child I loved coffee,” explained Oscar. “My father also enjoyed coffee and he was always mixing different flavors and asking what did I think.” Oscar gravitated to working in a coffee shop because he wanted to learn about the commercial side of the coffee business. “During university coffee I lived on coffee!” 
When the international coffee chain Starbucks opened in Mexico, Oscar was inspired. “I knew that was what I wanted to do with my life: make excellent coffee using Mexican products!” Oscar started planning what elements his coffee shop would have: he wanted the physical shop to be attractive, clean, comfortable with wifi (like home). Oscar wanted to showcase the best coffee beans from different regions because of the unique flavors; and he planned to have a huge menu of coffee drinks to satisfy every mood or palate. “I added a selection of light, quick meals that includes bagels, salads, sandwiches; as well as a variety of bakery goods because, donuts and pie go great with coffee any time!”
Oscar has studied coffee growing, taken training brew classes and saturated himself in coffee knowledge. Oscar lights up when he explains bean characteristics or brewing methods. Owning a coffee shop is not just a business for him, it is a passion, a career, a source of pride that his country grows such quality product. “I feel like an ambassador for 100% Mexican coffee- it is the most flavorful in the world!” He is proud to use locally grown Nayarit coffee beans in his blends.
Not only has Oscar personally selected every aspect of the restaurant’s décor, menu and beverages, he insists that his 9 employees love coffee too. “When I interview, I try to find people who believe in the importance of coffee being prepared just right and presented attractively. It’s not enough to simply want to work.”
Oscar’s wife of ten years, Johanna Dennis, shares his vision of developing a chain of Mexican high-end coffee shops. “We love Nayarit and its towns. I have decided to stay here for the tranquility and natural beauty. It’s a great place to raise our daughter.” The Guayabitos venue is located in a new strip mall across from the Pemex station. The interior décor features relaxing booths while the comfortable outside seating offers a view of the mountains.
All of the light food choices are made when ordered and the pastries are fresh daily. There are four choices of the baguettes, croissants, and sandwiches if you crave more than sweets with your designer brew. For those who like donuts with your coffee and newspaper, Krispy Kreme are available on Saturdays and Sundays. Treat yourself to a weekend treat as you read online with the free WiFi connection.
