Jaltemba Bay is a perfect combination of beautiful beach, comfortable accommodations and a great variety of activities in a small-town setting. A trip to the ocean is magical but exploring the culture of Los Ayala, Rincon de Guayabitos, or La Penita is an unforgettable experience! In the last dozen years more and more visitors are enchanted by the magic of coastal Mexico because, besides the stunning natural beauty, there are many high-quality restaurants that offer delicious, fresh food but at affordable prices.
Many people walk the beach daily and later partake of an interesting activity in the afternoon or evening. There are entertainment options that range from once a year to once a week; free to need an advance ticket. In addition, loo9cal talent provide an exciting range of live music options. Interested in art? Many original works are available in shops or at the open-air markets.
The ocean related activities appeal to every age. The whale watching boat rides are available daily when the leviathans are in residence. Another fun option is the half day excursion to the protected Isa de Coral that is perfect to snorkel and view the many sea birds that nest on the island. You can learn scuba, ride a banana float or go deep sea fishing right out of your hotel. There is good boogi boarding but for real riding the waves, it’s better farther south.
There are two area markets that need to be on your bucket list. Monday has the Guayabitos market in the town plaza next to the church. On Thursday a larger group of vendors sets up in La Penita town square and down the streets. It’s a Mexican cultural phenomenon known as tianguis or outdoor market. Unlike the NOTB flea markets, the Mexican outdoor markets specialize in new, hand-crafted items. The plethora of folk-art crafts is stunning- it’s impossible to not find something that you must have!
A very popular activity for visitors is to attend one of the themed events for a cause: these once a year parties offer entertainment, dancing, food, drink and lots more. Best of all, these events fund many important benefits for local residents.
If you like variety, various venues have relaxing, interesting games or exercise. Take a class to learn Spanish, create your own art with artist Jo Lorimer: lots of varying times available to fit into your visit.
For many people, the epitome of life or vacation is enjoying a cold brew on the ocean beach while listening to live music. Jaltemba Bay boasts of several outstanding professional bands and musicians. The following is a summary -not all of the talent- so you need to ask at you hotel or social media for more performances. The Guayabitos Hotel Association provides an wonderful, free concert series for each Saturday night in February. Seating is provided in the Guayabitos main plaza.
