Mexico is world’s 11th-largest producer of coffee

In the 2016-2017 period, Mexico ranked 11th among the largest coffee producers worldwide, with 1.6 percent of global production and positioning itself in 12th place at international level as an exporter, according to Marcos Gottfried, CEO of Expo Café 2017.

During the announcement of the exhibition held from August 31 to September 2 in Mexico City, the director said that last year, 3.5 million coffee bags of 60 kilos were produced in México, and 717,336 hectares of coffee were harvested mostly in Chiapas, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Puebla and Guerrero.

Gottfried also pointed out that the average of coffee consumption in the country reaches 1,600 kilograms, and according to the Mexican Association of Coffee and Specialty Coffee, Mexico will achieve a higher number of coffee shops in the country, rising to 70,000.

He recalled that in 2016, world coffee production grew at an average annual rate of 2.7 percent, which meant a global harvest of 153.3 million 60-kilogram coffee bags; 56.3 percent of Arabian variety and 43.7 percent robust.

Marcos Gottfried recognized that this industry generates a large number of jobs, as an example in 2009, 12 thousand coffee shops were operating in Mexico and 59 thousand people were employed by those establishments; while in 2013, the industry integrated the coldbrew businesses, along with coffee bars and coffee shops, by that year, a total of 144,259 people were employed by a coffee related business.

Gottfried concluded that the final consumer currently has a wider knowledge of the origin, the type of grain and the different ways to prepare coffee.”

During its 20th edition Expo Café will offer exhibitors and visitors the opportunity to do business, as it will have a large number of producers and suppliers showcasing their products and services.
