Experience the Beauty and Fun of Mexican Outdoor Markets

Tara A. Spears

No trip to Mexico is complete without visiting one of the area’s outdoor markets (tianguis). It is a relaxing way to experience a slice of Mexican culture, pick up a souvenir or gift and work up an appetite strolling around the market. Many people then meet friends at one of the many great restaurants for a cold one and a delicious meal! Here’s a list of the Jaltemba Bay outdoor markets: All markets generally are open from 9 am until 1:00, depending on weather and crowds.

Mondays: the gorgeous Guayabitos town Plaza hosts a market. Located next to the church on Avenida Sol Nuevo; no practical items but lovely ceramics, tin art, fabrics.

Thursdays: the newly redone La Penita town square boasts the largest variety of crafts, art and household items.

Saturdays: South Guayabitos market at the Tibouron Park on the ocean. (next to Decameron resort) Very nice selection of art and handmade jewelry, clothes.

Saturdays: Lo de Marco offers different selection of handmade items as well as the folk art. Located on the main street. This market has several holistic vendors that you do not find at the other tianguis, such as massage, gluten-free breads, natural coco and more.

Fridays: Las Varas, a 10 drive north of the bay, has more choices of Mexican handicrafts.

No matter what you are looking for, one of the tianguis will have it. Don’t miss out on the experience!
