The long anticipated ocean stroll in La Penita is in
the final stages of construction. What was a dream 40
years ago is now a reality and well worth the wait.
Those who are familiar with the town know that for the
last year the streets leading to the malecon have been
torn up and the scene of intense construction with large
machines and piles of material. The state of the art
engineering has created a beautiful, safe place to sit
and enjoy the sunsets over the Jaltemba Bay. The walking
surface is non-slide pebbles inlaid with ocean rock
details, coupled with 14 comfortable double benches and
an additional 14 single benches to accommodate crowds.
Besides the fantastic view, the walk has been tricked
out with charming light fixtures and planted with
gorgeous queen palms that will shade the seating when
mature and add ambiance as the fronds rustle in the
A large portion of the preparation for making the
malecon easily assessable has been the construction of
both wheelchair ramps and wide steps up.
The street bordering the seawall/malecon is finally
paved but construction continues along the two streets
connecting to the avenedia proper. Sidewalks are
finished and painted, but the electrical work is ongoing
so there are hazardous open boxes throughout the
Itís interesting to note that all the new streets are
already painted with no parking stripesÖ which makes the
closest parking for going to the malecon and the area
resturants on the avenida. But the avenida already has
half of the parking space commendeered by taxis and taco
stands. This should create an interesting situation
during peak tourist season. It would seem that now La
Penita needs a public parking area in order to get to
the malecon. Another issue might be will the strolling
ventors mob the malecon? Will the food carts/ mobile
tacos stands move to the new streets? Hopefully the town
planners will regulate the situation.
Returning seasonal residents and tourists will delight
in the sure to be completed new La PeŮita malecon; itís
a beautiful addition to our community.
